Bwindi is in the far southwest corner of Uganda, roughly 500 kilometres from Kampala. The drive takes 8–10 hours depending on the sector you're heading to. The road via Mbarara and Kabale is entirely tarmac as far as the park entrance.
Several charter airlines operate flights from Entebbe to the Kihihi airstrip near the Buhoma and Ruhija sectors, or to Kisoro for the southern sectors. The flight takes about an hour and saves considerable time, though it costs considerably more.
Most visitors arrive as part of an organised safari; going independently is entirely possible but requires arranging accommodation and permits well in advance. The Uganda Wildlife Authority office in Kampala handles permit bookings, or permits can be arranged online through their website.
