Namirembe Cathedral

Anglican cathedral on its own hill, with a small museum and fine views

St Paul's Cathedral on Namirembe Hill is the mother church of the Anglican Church of Uganda and, like its Catholic counterpart on Lubaga Hill across the valley, dates from the missionary era of the late 19th century. The current building was completed in 1919 — the fourth church on this site, its predecessors having burned or been destroyed.

The cathedral sits at the top of Namirembe Hill, and the walk up is worth it for the views alone. Inside, there is a small museum of church history and the graves of early missionaries, including Alexander Mackay, whose arrival in 1878 marked the beginning of sustained Anglican missionary activity in Buganda. The contrast between the Catholic cathedral on Lubaga Hill and this Anglican one opposite — both visible from each other — reflects the denominational rivalries that shaped Uganda's colonial and post-colonial history.
