Owino Market (St Balikuddembe Market)

Kampala's sprawling central market, one of the largest in Uganda

Owino Market — officially renamed St Balikuddembe Market but still called Owino by almost everyone — covers several city blocks near the central taxi park and is one of the largest markets in Uganda. It is not a tourist market selling crafts; it is a functioning wholesale and retail market where Kampala shops. Stalls sell secondhand clothes (much of it donated Western clothing), fresh produce, dried fish, household goods, tools, phone accessories, and almost anything else you might need.

Walking through Owino is an overwhelming experience: the lanes are tight, the noise is constant, and the organisation appears to be purely organic. Hold your bag close and keep moving. The market is best visited in the morning before it gets too hot and crowded. The adjacent Nakasero Market, a short walk uphill, is slightly calmer and better for fresh vegetables and spices.
