Uganda Martyrs Catholic Shrine Namugongo

Major Catholic pilgrimage shrine commemorating the Uganda Martyrs at Namugongo

The Uganda Martyrs Catholic Shrine at Namugongo is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites in East Africa. It commemorates the Catholic converts killed in the late 19th century under Kabaka Mwanga II, a story that remains central to Ugandan Catholic identity and to the country's wider religious history.

The modern basilica has a broad, tent-like form and stands in open grounds that fill with pilgrims around Martyrs' Day in early June. Outside that period the shrine is quieter and easier to absorb. It lies northeast of central Kampala, so allow time for traffic and treat it as a deliberate excursion rather than a quick city-centre stop.
