Railway Museum

The Railway Museum is a small open-air collection of rolling stock and artefacts from Zambia's railway history, housed in the old locomotive sheds near the station. The main exhibits are the steam engines themselves — heavy, rusting, and impressive — which ran the Cape-to-Cairo line that Cecil Rhodes dreamed of building across the continent. Livingstone was an important junction on this line, and the railway brought both the colonial administration and the first significant wave of commerce.

Beyond the trains, the museum has a small display on the history of Jews in Zambia — an unexpected element that reflects the role of Jewish immigrant traders in the development of colonial Southern Rhodesia. The collection is modest and the museum is not heavily staffed or curated, but enthusiasts of railway history or colonial-era infrastructure will find it worth an hour.
