Zambia

Landlocked southern African country of walking safaris, Victoria Falls, and vast Zambezi-fed parks.

Zambia is one of Africa's great safari destinations, yet it remains blissfully uncrowded compared to its neighbors. This is the country where the walking safari was invented, where Victoria Falls thunders on its southern border, and where vast national parks shelter some of the continent's densest wildlife populations. If you want an authentic African wilderness experience without the tourist buses, Zambia is it.

The country is shaped like a butterfly, landlocked between eight neighbors in southern-central Africa. The landscape is mostly high plateau, cut through by the Zambezi River and its tributaries, dotted with lakes and wetlands. In the south, Victoria Falls marks the border with Zimbabwe. In the east, the Luangwa Valley carves a deep rift through the bush. In the west, the enormous Kafue National Park stretches across an area larger than Wales. And in the north, Lake Bangweulu's swamps and Lake Tanganyika's shores feel like a different country entirely.

Lusaka, the capital, is a sprawling but functional city where most travelers begin. It has no great sights of its own, but it is the transport hub and a good place to organize onward travel. Livingstone, near Victoria Falls, is the adventure capital of the country and the most visited town. Up in the Copperbelt, Kitwe and Ndola are industrial cities with a gritty charm and a window into Zambia's economic engine.

Zambians are famously friendly and welcoming. The country has been politically stable since independence in 1964, with peaceful transfers of power that are the exception rather than the rule in the region. English is the official language, so getting around is straightforward. The infrastructure is improving but still rough in places -- expect potholed roads, unreliable electricity, and the occasional adventure just getting from A to B. That is part of the appeal.

The best time for wildlife viewing is the dry season from June to October, when animals gather at shrinking water sources and the bush thins out. But the emerald season (November to April) transforms the landscape into a lush green paradise and brings Victoria Falls to its thundering peak. Whenever you go, Zambia rewards the traveler who is willing to go a little further and stay a little longer.
