The Copperbelt Museum in central Ndola is one of the better regional museums in Zambia and the best place to understand the history of the mining region that has shaped southern Africa. Exhibits cover the geology of the Copperbelt, the history of copper mining from pre-colonial times through the British colonial era to independence and nationalisation, and the social history of the mining communities.
The museum's "living museum" section recreates traditional village life with reconstructed dwellings, craftspeople at work, and demonstrations of traditional skills. It is somewhat touristy but genuinely educational. The mining history section, with photographs of the colonial mines, the labour disputes of the 1930s, and the boom years of the 1960s, is the highlight.
