Mutare is 263km east of Harare on a good road — the journey takes about 3.5 hours by car or bus. Zimbabwe's main intercity bus companies (Intercape, Blue Arrow) run regular services between Harare and Mutare. The road crosses the Eastern Highlands and is one of the more scenic drives in the country.
Mutare Airport, 10km south of town, has limited scheduled services from Harare; these are unreliable and most visitors travel by road. Coming from South Africa, the road from Beit Bridge and Harare is entirely tarred. From Mozambique, the Machipanda border post is 25km east of Mutare on the road to Beira; it is open 24 hours. Rental cars from Harare are the most flexible way to explore the Eastern Highlands.
