Several worthwhile excursions can be made from the capital. The Lion and Cheetah Park and Lake Chivero Game Park offer a chance to see lions, giraffes, and rhinos without venturing far — more drive-through zoo than wilderness, but good for those not heading to the bigger reserves.
Chapungu Kraal, in the suburbs, is a reproduction of a 19th-century Shona village with traditional dance performances on weekends and an excellent sculpture garden and art gallery. The Tengenenge Sculpture Community, a longer drive north through farmland, is home to thousands of stone sculptures and a multi-cultural community of artists working in the open air.
