Harare is a large, spread-out city and getting around requires some effort. The city centre is walkable, but most attractions and suburbs are too far apart to cover on foot.
Taxis
The safest and most reliable option for visitors. Use radio taxis rather than street hails — ask your hotel to book one or use a ride-hailing app. Always agree the price before setting off. Uber operates in Harare and is generally cheaper and more transparent than unmetered taxis.
Kombis (minibus taxis)
The informal minibus network covers the city comprehensively and is extremely cheap. Routes are complex and stops unmarked, but locals are generally helpful with directions. Pickpocketing occurs on crowded kombis — keep valuables secure.
Car rental
Several international and local car rental companies operate in Harare. A car gives you flexibility to visit outlying attractions like Chapungu Kraal, Epworth, and Lake Chivero. Driving in Harare is manageable, though potholes and erratic driving from other road users require attention.
Walking
The city centre, bounded roughly by the botanical gardens, Third Street, and the central park, is walkable in daylight. After dark, walking is inadvisable — take a taxi.
