Eating Out

Bamiyan eats simply and well. The bazaar holds a string of small chaikhanas and family-run restaurants serving Hazara and broader Afghan classics: qabili pulao (long-grain rice with carrots, raisins, and lamb), mantu (dumplings filled with onion and mince, topped with yoghurt and tomato sauce), aush (noodle soup with lentils and dried mint), and grilled lamb kebabs. Naan comes out of clay tandoor ovens every couple of hours and is best while warm. Most restaurants are male-dominated; women generally eat in family rooms at the back. Fresh apricots, mulberries, walnuts, and almonds from the valley are the seasonal snack to look out for. Alcohol is illegal and not available.
