Herat has an international airport (Herat Airport, IATA: HEA) with connections to Kabul and, historically, to regional cities in Iran, India, and the Gulf. Under Taliban rule since 2021, international flight connectivity has been severely reduced and remains uncertain.
Overland from Iran: The main border crossing into Afghanistan from Iran is at Islam Qala, about 120km west of Herat on the road from Mashhad. This route was historically popular with overland travellers; its current status and safety should be verified before travel.
Overland from Kabul: The road from Kabul to Herat crosses some of the most remote and historically unsafe terrain in Afghanistan, a journey of some 1,100km. Travel on this route is not recommended for independent travellers.
Note: Afghanistan is currently under Taliban control. Travel advisories from most governments strongly advise against all travel to Afghanistan. Conditions change rapidly; consult your government's travel advisory before making any plans.
