Herat's main sights are concentrated in and around the old city. The Friday Mosque and the Citadel are the two essential stops; both can be reached on foot from each other. The Musalla complex to the northwest is a sadder sight — five of its six minarets destroyed by a British officer in 1885 to improve defensive firing lines — but the two that remain are among the finest tilework in Central Asia.
Note: Herat is currently under Taliban control. Conditions for tourists are extremely difficult and the safety situation requires careful assessment before any visit.
