Jid Hafs

Old Bahraini residential suburb west of Manama, once the island's capital before the modern city took over.

Jidd Hafs is a residential suburb sitting just west of Manama, Bahrain's capital. It is one of the oldest settled areas on the island and served as Bahrain's capital city before Manama took that role — traces of that longer history show in its older neighbourhoods and traditional architecture amid the modern sprawl.

Today Jidd Hafs is a quiet, largely residential area without major tourist sights. It is useful mainly as an affordable base for exploring Manama and northern Bahrain, with public transport connections into the capital running regularly. The one genuine point of historical interest nearby is the Khamis Mosque in the adjacent village of Khamis — believed to be the oldest mosque in Bahrain, with minarets dating to the 14th and 15th centuries.

Things to Do

Jidd Hafs offers little in the way of conventional tourist sights — it is a residential suburb and functions as one. The main reason to base yourself here is proximity to Manama and the lower accommodation prices compared to the capital. That said, the Khamis Mosque, believed to be the oldest mosque in Bahrain, sits just south of the suburb and is genuinely worth the short detour.
