Chele La Pass

Bhutan's highest motorable pass at 3,988m, with views of Chomolhari and Jichu Drake

The highest motorable pass in Bhutan at 3,988 metres, on the road between the Paro and Haa valleys. The drive up climbs through dense blue-pine forest and emerges suddenly onto a high meadow strung with thousands of prayer flags. On clear days the views are extraordinary: Mount Chomolhari (7,326 m) and Jichu Drake (6,989 m) line up to the north, and the deep Haa valley opens out below to the west.

About 35 kilometres from Paro town and an hour and a half by car each way. The best chance of a clear view is early morning; clouds usually build up by mid-morning. Bring layers — even in summer the wind across the pass is cold. A short walk uphill from the parking area leads to a small chorten and the best of the views; for a longer outing, a marked trail continues for several hours through alpine meadows toward the Kila Nunnery.
