Gangteng Monastery

Gangteng Monastery, also called Gangtey Goemba, sits above Phobjikha Valley and is the main seat of the Pema Lingpa tradition of the Nyingma school of Buddhism. Its position is half the appeal: the monastery looks out over the wide glacial valley where black-necked cranes spend the winter.

The courtyard and surrounding paths make a natural start or finish for a Phobjikha visit. It is especially atmospheric during festival time, but even on an ordinary day the mix of monastery life, pine-covered slopes, and valley views makes it one of Wangdue Phodrang's strongest sights.
