The Gadong Night Market (Pasar Pelbagai Barangan Gadong) is the best place to eat in BSB, and arguably the best reason to make the 4-kilometre trip from the city centre to the Gadong commercial district. Open from around 4pm every evening, it is a large covered market where dozens of vendors sell grilled chicken, satay, nasi katok, grilled fish, kuih (local sweets), and fresh fruit juices at prices that seem impossibly cheap — most dishes cost BND1-3.
The market is thoroughly local. Very few tourists find their way here, which makes it all the more worthwhile. The smell of charcoal and grilled meat hits you from the car park. Plastic tables and stools fill the space between stalls. Order chicken satay from one stall, rice and rendang from another, and a cup of teh tarik from a third — mixing and matching from multiple vendors is the standard approach. Go hungry.
