BSB's city center is compact enough to walk, though the heat and humidity will slow you down. The main sights -- the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Kampong Ayer waterfront, and the central markets -- are all within walking distance of each other. Getting to the Gadong commercial and dining district, about 3 km away, requires transport.
Buses -- The Franchise Bus system runs six color-coded routes through BSB and out to Gadong, Muara, and the airport. Fares are a flat BND1. Service runs from around 6am to 8pm, though buses are infrequent and can be confusing for newcomers. The TransportBN app helps with routes.
Taxis -- Metered taxis start at BND3.50. They can be hard to find on the street, so it is best to call ahead or ask your hotel to book one. The Dart ride-hailing app is a local alternative that works like Grab and is often cheaper.
Water taxis -- Essential for reaching Kampong Ayer and for river crossings. You will see them lined up along the waterfront. A short trip costs BND2-5, negotiable. Just wave and one will pull up.
Car rental -- The most practical option if you plan to explore beyond BSB. Roads are in excellent condition, traffic is light, and petrol is cheap. Rental agencies operate from the airport and major hotels.
Most of BSB shuts down by 9pm. If you are out late, make sure you have a way to get back to your hotel, as public transport stops early and street taxis become scarce after dark.
