Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

The Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, also known as the Kiarong Mosque for its location in the Kiarong district, is the largest mosque in Brunei. Completed in 1994, it is a more modern building than the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque but equally striking — a complex of 29 golden domes surrounded by manicured gardens, four tall minarets, and decorative fountains.

Where the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is intimate and urban, the Jame'Asr is grand and spacious, set in a large park about 4 kilometres north of the city centre. The interior is open to non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times and is even more ornate than its more famous counterpart — Italian marble, Belgian glass, and an enormous chandelier in the main prayer hall. The approach through the formal gardens at sunset, when the golden domes catch the light, is exceptional.

A story
The mosque has 29 golden domes — one for each Sultan of Brunei up to Hassanal Bolkiah, the 29th, who commissioned it to mark his Silver Jubilee. The number 29 appears repeatedly throughout the architecture. It can hold 5,000 worshippers simultaneously and during Friday prayers the surrounding lawns fill with men who cannot fit inside.
