Getting There

By Air

Most visitors fly in. Cambodia has three international airports: Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH), Siem Reap International Airport (REP), and Sihanoukville Airport (KOS). Phnom Penh is the main hub with the most connections; Siem Reap is the most convenient if Angkor is your primary destination.

Direct flights connect Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and several Chinese cities to both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. There are no direct long-haul flights from Europe or North America — you'll connect through one of the regional hubs, most commonly Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur.

A new major airport, Techo International Airport, is under construction south of Phnom Penh and expected to open in 2025, eventually replacing the current Phnom Penh airport.

By Land

Overland crossings from Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos are all possible, and many travelers enter this way on multi-country itineraries.

From Thailand: The most-used crossings are Poipet–Aranyaprathet (on the Bangkok–Siem Reap route) and Hat Lek–Cham Yeam (for Koh Kong). Direct bus services run Bangkok to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Note that in 2025 some border areas near the Thai frontier have seen military tensions — check current conditions before crossing.

From Vietnam: The Moc Bai–Bavet crossing is the busiest, on the Ho Chi Minh City–Phnom Penh route, with comfortable bus services making the trip in around six hours. The Xa Xia–Prek Chak crossing near Kep is useful if you're traveling the south coast.

From Laos: Travelers coming from the Mekong route can cross at Nong Nok Khiene–Trapaing Kreal near Stung Treng, and continue south by bus or boat.

Visa

Almost all nationalities require a visa. The easiest options are:

  • E-visa: Apply online at evisa.gov.kh at least a few days before arrival. Single entry, 30 days, US$30.
  • Visa on arrival: Available at all three international airports and most major land borders. Tourist visa costs US$30; bring a passport photo and the fee in cash.
  • E-Arrival Card: As of January 2025, all air arrivals must complete an online e-Arrival Card within seven days before landing. Fill this out before you fly.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your entry date.
