Marum

Marum on Street 7 is a training restaurant run by Tree Alliance, the social enterprise that also operates the Romdeng restaurant in Phnom Penh. It employs and trains young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in kitchen and front-of-house skills, and has been doing so since 2010. The food is genuinely good — the menu ranges across Southeast Asian dishes including Cambodian, Thai, and Vietnamese cooking, with a few Western items — and the standard of service is attentive and professional, which is a tribute to the training programme.

The restaurant occupies a wooden house with a garden courtyard, making it a pleasant setting as well as a good meal. Dishes are in the mid-range price bracket by Cambodian tourist standards. The social enterprise element is transparent and explained on the menu; you can read about specific trainees and the programme's philosophy. A portion of every bill goes to the training fund.
