Miss Wong in "The Lane" — the alley running parallel to Pub Street — is the best cocktail bar in the Pub Street area and a genuine escape from the surrounding noise. The space is intimate and styled after a 1930s Shanghai bar: red lacquer screens, dark wood, low lighting, and good music at a volume that allows conversation. The cocktail list is creative and properly made; the bar has won regional recognition for the quality of its drinks.
The Lane itself is worth knowing: it is one of the few alleys near Pub Street with a good concentration of places that are not purely targeting the maximum-turnover-minimum-quality market. Miss Wong draws a mix of locals, expats, and visitors who have discovered it exists. Go after 9pm when it fills up, or earlier if you want a quieter drink before dinner.
