Flooded Forest and Wetlands

The area around the confluence of the Mekong and Sekong rivers contains some of the best-preserved flooded forest habitat in Cambodia. In the wet season (June to October) the forest floor is submerged and the trees stand in a metre or more of clear water — a landscape of extraordinary visual strangeness, like boating through a drowned woodland. Kingfishers, hornbills, and over 100 species of waterbird have been recorded here.

Kayak trips through the flooded forest are available from Stung Treng town; the half-day route follows the Sekong through the forest before joining the Mekong for the return. In the dry season, when water levels drop, the forest floor is accessible on foot and reveals the deeply cracked mud and exposed root systems that give this ecosystem its particular character.
