Leshutang Hall is Hongcun's oldest surviving ancestral building, a clan assembly hall of the Wang family that dates to the Ming dynasty. The scale is impressive — the hall is tall enough that the roof beams disappear into shadow, and the main chamber could accommodate several hundred people for the clan ceremonies for which it was designed. The columns are unpainted and worn to a silky grey by centuries of smoke and handling.
Unlike Chengzhi Hall, Leshutang has a more austere, formal quality — it was a place for governance, arbitration, and ceremony rather than domestic living. The carved panels focus on moral exemplars and historical figures rather than decorative scenes. The slightly musty smell and the sound of pigeons in the rafters give it an atmosphere that the more polished merchant houses lack.
