The Moon Pond is the defining image of Hongcun — a crescent-shaped pool just inside the village entrance whose still surface reflects the whitewashed walls, ink-dark roofs, and grey stone bridges of the buildings surrounding it. Photographs of this view have reproduced so many times that arriving here feels like stepping into a painting you already know. This is precisely the quality that draws art students from across China, who set up their easels along the bank and paint the reflection through morning and afternoon light.
The pond is at its best in early morning — before 7am in peak season — when the light is low and the crowd thin. The reflection is clearest when there is no wind. In summer, lotuses fringe the edges, adding color to what is otherwise an image of studied simplicity. The cobblestoned path around the pond is accessible throughout the day.
