Longjishan Sky Road

Longjishan — Dragon's Backbone Mountain — is the ridge that runs along the western edge of Huaibei's urban area, and the Sky Road is a 55-kilometer scenic route following the ridge top, passing through pine woodland and open moorland with consistent views across the North China Plain. The road is wide enough for cars throughout, and the better sections can also be cycled.

The views are broad rather than dramatic — this is the flat north, not the mountains of southern Anhui — but on a clear day you can see for thirty or forty kilometers across the agricultural plain, with the city spread below. The ridge also makes a straightforward hiking and mountain biking area for Huaibei residents. Viewpoints with parking areas are spaced along the road; the northernmost section has the best views over the city.

A story
The Dragon's Backbone Sky Road was one of the first scenic drives in northern Anhui and became a model for similar ridge road projects in other coal cities seeking to reinvent themselves as tourism destinations. The road was constructed in the early 2000s as part of a deliberate strategy to give Huaibei an identity beyond its exhausted coalfields — an example of a rustbelt city trying to build its way out of resource dependency.
