Xiangshan Park and Temple

Xiangshan Park covers the forested hill that rises from the northern edge of Huaibei's urban district, with a Buddhist temple complex at its summit. The walk to the temple through woodland paths takes about forty minutes at a comfortable pace and offers progressively better views over the city and the flat agricultural plain extending to the north. The temple itself is active and reasonably well-maintained.

The park is a genuine recreation area for Huaibei residents — morning walkers, tai chi practitioners, and retirees playing chess populate the lower terraces from early morning. The summit view takes in the full extent of the city and gives a clear sense of how the coal-era urban expansion has covered what was once purely agricultural land. Best in clear weather; the views are wasted in haze.

A story
The Buddhist temple on Xiangshan has been rebuilt several times since its Tang dynasty founding. The current main hall contains a set of painted murals added during a nineteenth-century restoration that are among the more interesting surviving examples of Qing dynasty provincial Buddhist painting — less refined than the court tradition but with a directness and vitality that the more polished temple art often lacks.
