A complex of disused East German-built factories in the northeast of the city, converted from the early 2000s into China's best-known contemporary art district. Galleries, artists' studios, cafés, and design shops fill the Bauhaus warehouses; some of the biggest names in Chinese contemporary art — Ai Weiwei, Zhang Xiaogang — have shown here. The scene is more commercial than it was a decade ago, but it is still the easiest place in Beijing to see serious contemporary work.
Closed Mondays for most galleries. Allow half a day.
