Pace Beijing

Beijing outpost of the international Pace gallery in a converted 798 factory hall

The Beijing space of Pace, one of the major international contemporary-art galleries, occupies a cavernous former factory hall in the heart of the 798 district. Since opening in 2008 it has shown both blue-chip Western names and leading Chinese artists, and the raw industrial volume — exposed brick, sawtooth roof, original machinery bays — is a large part of the appeal.

Admission is free and the programme changes regularly, so it is worth checking what is on before a visit. It makes a natural anchor for a wander through 798, alongside the neighbouring UCCA and the smaller galleries that fill the surrounding lanes.
