The Altar of Land and Grain sits west of the ceremonial axis between Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, mirroring the Imperial Ancestral Temple on the east side. Emperors came here to honour the land of the empire.
The surrounding Zhongshan Park is quieter than the main imperial sights nearby, with gardens and flower displays that make it a useful pause between Tiananmen and the palace walls.
