Great Leap Brewing

The hutong-based craft brewery that pioneered Beijing's craft beer scene, with its original taproom tucked inside a courtyard off Doujiao Hutong near Nanluoguxiang. The beers use local ingredients — Sichuan peppercorns, jasmine, honey from Yunnan — which gives the range a distinctly Chinese character that sets it apart from generic craft beer. The flagship Honey Ma Gold is reliably good; the seasonal specials are worth asking about.

The courtyard setting is ideal in summer. Several other branches have opened around the city, but this original location, cramped and atmospheric, remains the most interesting. No reservations; arrive early on weekends.
