Yinding Bridge (Silver Ingot Bridge)

Small humpbacked stone bridge dividing Qianhai and Houhai, framing the Western Hills

A small humpbacked stone bridge at the narrow waist where the Qianhai and Houhai lakes meet, named for its resemblance to a silver ingot. It is one of the classic viewpoints of old Beijing: on a clear day the Western Hills line up beyond the lake through the arch of the bridge, a sight celebrated for centuries as "Yinding guan shan" — gazing at the mountains from the Silver Ingot Bridge.

The current bridge is a modern rebuilding, and the spot is crowded with bar touts and rickshaw drivers in the evening. Come early in the morning, when locals practise tai chi along the banks and the lake is still, to see why the view earned its reputation.
