Huaqing Jiayuan

Residential complex at the heart of Wudaokou's Koreatown, ringed with Korean barbecue and noodle joints

A run of apartment blocks directly south of Wudaokou station, Huaqing Jiayuan is the heart of the neighbourhood's Korean enclave. Its ground floors and the lanes around it are packed with Korean barbecue houses, cheap noodle and bibimbap spots, fried-chicken-and-beer joints, and late-opening cafés — the densest concentration of genuine, inexpensive Korean food in Beijing, kept honest by the Korean students who eat here.

It is a place to wander and pick somewhere rather than to seek out a single address; individual restaurants come and go, but the cluster endures. The complex is also the gateway to Wudaokou's student nightlife — the cheap bars and clubs tucked into its basements and surrounding streets stay busy late.
