Imperial Ancestral Temple

The Imperial Ancestral Temple is one of central Beijing's grandest temple complexes, standing east of the ceremonial route between Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Emperors came here to honour their ancestors, and the halls echo the scale and formality of the nearby palace architecture.

The interiors suffered badly during the Cultural Revolution, and the main hall now serves as a musical-instrument museum, but the complex still rewards a visit. It is quieter than the Forbidden City and good for understanding the ritual landscape around imperial Beijing.
