Great Wall at Jinshanling

The best section of the Great Wall for serious hiking, located about 130 km northeast of Beijing in Hebei province. Jinshanling is partially restored but far less so than Badaling or Mutianyu, which means uneven footing and more atmosphere. The wall here runs along a dramatic ridge with steep drops on both sides and excellent views in both directions on a clear day.

The classic itinerary is to enter at Jinshanling and hike east to Simatai, a three-hour walk over varied terrain with some steep climbs. Private drivers and minibuses from Beijing are the practical option — public transport requires several changes. Budget a full day from the city.

A story
The three-hour hike from Jinshanling to Simatai is widely considered the best walk on the Great Wall anywhere. The wall undulates over dramatic ridgelines, some sections restored, others crumbling into the hillside, with watchtowers perched at intervals. At the midpoint you cross into the Simatai reservation and the wall becomes steeper and wilder. Go on a weekday to have sections of it entirely to yourself.
