A privately founded contemporary-art museum occupying a converted workshop deep in 798, M WOODS has built a reputation for ambitious shows that mix international names — it staged early China outings for the likes of David Hockney and Paul McCarthy — with younger Chinese artists. The raw brick interior has been left largely intact, and the curation is among the more adventurous in the district.
It charges admission where many of the surrounding galleries are free, but the programme is consistently stronger. Check what is showing before you go; it is one of the spaces that justifies the trip out to 798 rather than simply filling the lanes between the bigger galleries.
