Tian'anmen Gate stands at the north end of Tiananmen Square and marks the old entrance toward the Imperial City and Forbidden City. The gate is instantly recognizable for the large portrait of Mao Zedong above its central arch, and visitors can pass beneath it while moving between the square and the palace precinct.
