Gushan — Drum Mountain — is the principal hill east of Fuzhou city, rising to about 925 metres and covered in subtropical forest. It is named for a rock formation near the summit that allegedly produces a drumlike sound in the wind. A cable car runs from the base to near the Yongquan Temple complex, and a network of paved hiking trails connects the various viewpoints and pavilions.
The mountain is popular with local day-trippers and is genuinely forested — a real contrast to the dense urban fabric below. On weekdays it is quiet enough that you can walk the upper trails in near-solitude. Several tea plantations occupy the lower slopes, producing Fuzhou white tea, and vendors sell fresh cups at the cable car station.
