Church of Christ the King

The Church of Christ the King is a Gothic Revival Catholic church on the Xiamen side of the ferry channel, visible from Gulangyu's waterfront. Built in the 1930s, it is one of the more architecturally ambitious Catholic churches in Fujian, with a full cruciform plan and a tower that reads clearly against the Xiamen skyline. The Diocese of Xiamen, which the church serves, has a history stretching back to early Spanish Dominican missionary activity in Fujian.

The church is an active parish and is accessible to visitors outside service hours. The interior preserves original woodwork and stained glass from the construction period. For visitors interested in the Catholic dimension of Fujian's complex religious history — the province has one of China's highest proportions of Catholics, a legacy of centuries of missionary activity — the church provides a tangible anchor to that story. It pairs naturally with South Putuo Temple for a morning that covers the range of Xiamen's religious architecture.
