Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster

The Tianluokeng cluster in Nanjing County is arguably the most photographed tulou grouping: four circular earthen buildings arranged around one square one in a natural hollow, visible from a hillside viewpoint that frames the entire compound against terraced fields. The arrangement has an accidental visual perfection that was entirely unplanned — each tulou was built at a different time over several generations, and the symmetry emerged from the constraints of the site rather than from design.

Tianluokeng is about 90 kilometres south of Longyan city and is typically visited alongside the Yongding clusters on a full-day circuit. The drive passes through mountain roads with views over rural Fujian that are themselves worth the trip. Admission covers access to several tulou in the cluster, and guides are available at the site. The visiting hours and admission prices change periodically — check locally before setting out.

A story
The Tianluokeng cluster — locally nicknamed the "four dishes and one soup" formation — sits in Nanjing County rather than Yongding, though most visitors group them together. The four round tulou surrounding a single square one in the hollow of a terraced hillside form a composition that has appeared on Chinese stamps and in every major photographic survey of the region. The viewpoint above the cluster, reached by a short steep path, gives the full composition in one glance.
