Baiquan Gorge Scenic Area

The Baiquan Gorge in Kangxian County is Longnan's best-known scenic area, a limestone gorge with multiple waterfalls, deep pools, and the dense forest cover that distinguishes southern Gansu from the arid landscapes further north. The footpaths through the gorge are well maintained and can be walked in a few hours, though the full scenic area is large enough to justify a full day if the weather is good.

Kangxian County as a whole has a greener character than most of Gansu — its position in the southern foothills, where moisture from Sichuan penetrates, gives it a subtropical edge that surprises visitors expecting the dry northwest. The gorge is the set piece, but the surrounding countryside with its terraced fields and river villages is attractive in its own right. Access is straightforward from Kangxian town.

A story
The name "Baiquan" means hundred springs, and the gorge earns it: water seeps and pours from multiple fractures in the limestone walls, feeding streams that run green through forested ravines. The geology here is karst — the same soluble rock formations that create cave systems elsewhere — and the springs are the visible expression of an extensive underground water network that has carved the valley over millions of years.
