The former Customs House is one of the clearest architectural traces of Shantou's treaty-port era. Its formal lines and waterfront position say a lot about the city's nineteenth- and early twentieth-century role as a controlled gateway for foreign trade.
It is best seen as part of a slow walk through the old commercial quarter. The building is less about a single interior visit than about understanding why this city grew where it did.
