East Pagoda (Dongtahsi)

The East Pagoda is a 50-metre octagonal brick tower dating to 1573, the tallest historic pagoda in Guangxi. It stands on the east bank of the Xun River and remains the most prominent historical structure visible in the modern city. The pagoda has survived remarkably intact given the turbulence of the past five centuries, including the Taiping Rebellion that started in this very region.

The interior is accessible and the view from the upper levels looks out over the river confluence and, on clear days, the karst hills to the north. The pagoda is a seven-storey structure with external balconies at each level, and the carved brick detailing on the eaves and pilasters is worth examining up close. The surrounding park is a popular spot for local residents in the evenings.
