Moon Hill

Moon Hill is the most recognisable landmark in the Yangshuo countryside — a natural limestone arch through a peak about 7 kilometres south of town, visible from a distance as a rough circle of light through the rock. The climb to the arch takes about 45 minutes on stone steps cut into the hillside; the arch itself sits at about 200 metres elevation with open views over the valley, farmland, and the surrounding karst towers.

The short hike is worth doing even for people who are not particularly interested in exercise. The view from the arch opening is one of the classic Yangshuo perspectives: the flat valley floor, the grid of agricultural fields, the scattered karst towers rising from it with the shapes that made Chinese landscape painting possible. The arch is also a rock climbing venue — the local karst provides grip that is unusual for limestone, and guided climbing tours can be arranged in Yangshuo town if you want to get on the rock rather than just look at it.

A story
Moon Hill is what remains after the ceiling of a limestone cave collapsed — the semicircular arch is all that's left of a karst chamber that formed millions of years ago. The arch was once a complete dome; the rest fell away and eroded. The shape changes as you approach: from a distance it looks like a full moon, from below it becomes a quarter-moon crescent, and through it from the summit you see the valley and the other peaks. Rock climbers recognised its potential in the 1990s, and several challenging routes now run up the karst face.
