Fanpai Village

Fanpai is a Miao village along the Qingshui River south of the county seat, its wooden stilt houses built on the slope above the water in the classic style of southeastern Guizhou river valley settlements. The houses sit on posts, with carved wooden balconies and tile roofs weathered to a grey-brown that blends with the surrounding forest. The overall effect from the river bank opposite is of a hillside that has become a village, or a village that has become part of the hillside.

The village is not managed as a tourist site, and it functions as an agricultural community. The terraced fields around it grow rice, and the river is used for fishing as well as transport. Coming here on a non-festival day means you will likely be the only visitor, which is the better version of the experience. The path from the county seat road takes about 30 minutes on foot along the river.

A story
Fanpai's stilt houses are built on the slope above the Qingshui River in a style that has barely changed in several centuries. The technique — wooden posts driven into the hillside, with the house floor cantilevered over the slope — means the downhill side of every house is elevated one or two storeys above the ground while the uphill side sits at ground level. The result is a village where rooftops on one street are at the same level as doorsteps on the street above.
