Xijiang Miao Museum

The Miao Museum at Xijiang occupies a traditional building near the main square and provides the most accessible English-language context for the history and material culture of the Miao people of the Leigongshan area. The displays cover the migration history of the Miao, the festival calendar, the meaning of embroidered motifs, and the silverwork tradition.

The museum is worth visiting early in the day, before the main performances begin and while the village is still quiet. An hour here before exploring the village gives you the context to understand what you're looking at in the residential areas — why the houses are built on posts, what the different embroidery patterns signify, how the social structure of the village is organised. The English-language information is better than average for a rural Guizhou museum.

A story
The museum's collection of Miao silver is among the best-documented in Guizhou. The full festival outfit of a Miao bride from this region — headdress, collar pieces, necklaces, bracelets, and bodice ornaments — can weigh up to 15 kilograms of silver. The working display shows the filigree technique: fine silver wire twisted and shaped by hand into the geometric and zoomorphic forms that have been the dominant aesthetic of Miao silverwork for at least 400 years. The skill is transmitted within families, and the best silversmiths here are known by name throughout the province.
