Village Viewpoint

The viewpoint on the ridge above the main entrance to Xijiang offers the best overview of the village's extraordinary extent. Looking down and across, you see the full hillside covered in the dark wood and grey tile of the traditional pen-and-ganlan stilt houses, arranged in tiers that follow the contours of the slope. At dawn, when mist fills the valley below and the upper village is in clear morning light, this view is exceptional.

The path to the viewpoint starts from the upper residential area of the village, a 15-minute walk uphill from the main square. It's easy to find by following the ridge path north from the upper residential lane. The viewpoint itself is a simple clearing with a wooden railing; arrive before the day-trip coaches to have it to yourself.

A story
The viewpoint above the village entrance is where Xijiang's scale becomes legible. From here the full extent of the settlement is visible — over 1,200 wooden stilt houses covering the hillside in tiers, the silver of rice terraces below them, the dark forest above. The village has been continuously inhabited for over 2,000 years according to Miao oral tradition, and the density of settlement represents not just one generation of construction but an accumulation of building over centuries. The newest houses look like the oldest houses, which is a form of architectural continuity that almost no other settlement of this size has maintained.
