Jitang Village

Jitang is the closest of Zhaoxing's neighbouring Dong villages, 3 kilometres up the valley. Like Zhaoxing, it has drum towers and wind-and-rain bridges built in the same nail-free timber tradition; unlike Zhaoxing, it has no entrance fee, no cultural performance venue, and almost no tourist infrastructure. The architecture is in slightly worse repair than Zhaoxing's maintained heritage structures, which is also an accurate reflection of what these villages look like when they're not being managed for visitors.

The footpath from Zhaoxing to Jitang passes through rice terraces on the valley sides, giving views down to the flat valley floor where both villages sit and up to the forested ridgelines above. The path takes 40 to 50 minutes; the return can be made on the same path or by the road, which is faster but less interesting. Coming to Jitang in the morning, before returning to Zhaoxing for the evening performance, is the logical sequence.

A story
Jitang, 3 kilometres uphill from Zhaoxing, has two drum towers and two wind-and-rain bridges — a smaller version of the architecture you see in Zhaoxing, but with essentially no other visitors. The village is connected to Zhaoxing by a path through rice terraces that takes about 40 minutes on foot; the walk gives a perspective on the agricultural landscape around both villages that is invisible from inside either one.
