Perfume Bay (Xiangshuiwan)

Perfume Bay (香水湾, Xiangshuiwan) is Lingshui's most celebrated beach: a long, east-facing stretch of white sand backed by hills, with consistent waves that have made it popular with the small surfing community on Hainan's east coast. The bay is part of what the Chinese tourism industry calls the "Chinese Riviera" — a stretch of the southeastern Hainan coast that has been developed more thoughtfully than Sanya's resort zone, with less density and more preserved shoreline.

Compared with Sanya's Yalong Bay or Dadonghai, Perfume Bay remains relatively uncrowded on weekdays. There are a few hotels and beach restaurants along the seafront, but wide stretches of the beach are still accessible without paying a resort fee. The water is clear and the waves moderate — good for swimming and bodyboarding, manageable for novice surfers. Getting here from Sanya takes about an hour by road; from Lingshui town, about 20 minutes.

A story
Perfume Bay was one of the last stretches of undeveloped beach on Hainan's southern coast when international tourism interest in the island first grew. The name comes from the scent of wildflowers that used to blow across the bay from the hills — a detail that speaks to how undisturbed this coast once was. Development has been slower here than at Sanya, and the bay retains more of that original character.
