Deer Turning Head Statue

The 12-metre granite sculpture at the top of Luhuitou Park

The Deer Turning Head statue is the centrepiece of Luhuitou Park — a 12-metre granite carving of the moment from the Li legend in which a hunter's quarry turns to face him and transforms into a young woman. The statue was carved in 1987 in a deliberate gesture of monumental nation-branding for the new resort area of Sanya, and has since become the symbol of the city.

The statue stands on the plateau at the top of the park, surrounded by a circular plaza with views in every direction. The composition is not subtle but the setting carries it, and the long sweep of coast visible from the base is worth the climb on its own.
